Boxing Ring & Auditorium Lighting

Boxing is an intense, fast and thrilling sport that involves high-impact movements. That is the reason why it is gaining more audience worldwide. Broadcasting requires up to 1400 lux LED lighting for boxing ring’s sprung stage or stadiums in light of the broad areas, while we need around 300 to 400 lux lighting for boxing training. The lighting requirement is even higher for the Olympic auditorium. Technically, the vertical luminance should be at least 50% of the horizontal luminance to achieve the best outcome. But you might be wondering apart from adequate brightness, what else is important on how to light up a boxing ring? And what are the advantages of replacing the metal halide, halogen, HPS or fluorescent lights?

5 Lighting Design Tips on How to Light Up the Boxing Ring & Facilities

1. Good Lighting Uniformity Enhances Performance of Boxing

When it comes to sport lighting design, uniformity always plays a vital part. We adopt premium optics and precise LED lenses so that our boxing ring flood lights deliver evenly distributed illuminance. Apart from brightness, we need to ensure the light can travel a long distance to reach the ground of the boxing ring. The players can see & punch the opponents with ease.

2. Energy Saving LED Lights Help Cut Down the Electricity Bill of Boxing Auditorium

There are many types of light we can choose. Compared with halogen (50 – 60 lm/w) and fluorescent lights (60 – 80 lm/w), LED lights are more energy saving. Our LED lighting fixture have high lighting efficiency of 120 – 150 lm/w (and premium version of 200 lm/W), which are 70 to 80% energy saving. To light up the boxing arena with the same size, you would need less power if you replace the existing HID lighting with LED. Lower power consumption means lesser heat generation as well.

3. High Color Rendering Index (CRI)

For televised, national and international boxing competitions, high CRI is the paramount feature of the lighting for stadium. Ra80 has become the “basic” lighting requirement. Some lighting designers would recommend Ra90 or even Ra95 for better quality. We cannot see the real colors under the lights if the CRI is poor.

4. Select the Proper Color Temperature of Boxing Arena Lights

Generally, majority of arena prefers 5000 to 5500K cool white light to satisfy the lighting requirement of boxing broadcasting. Sometimes we will use yellowish-orange light to create the unique atmosphere.

5. The Boxing Ring Lighting Should Not be FLICKERING – Cater to High-speed Cameras

There are super Slo-Mo (360 / 720fps) cameras inside most of the boxing ring. The standard is exceptionally high, at least 5000 Hz flicker-proof lighting is needed. Strobing will greatly affect the camera capturing the fast counterpunches. The flicking rate of our LED lights is less than 0.3% because we adopt the Meanwell driver (power supply) that has mature technology on providing stable voltage & current to the LED.

6. Extra Tips: Glare-free Lights for Boxers

Boxing requires quick response of athletes. Sometimes the critical moment occurs within a second – that is why glare-free feature is added to our lights. Our LED has built-in glare control system that reduces 40 to 60% unwanted glare.
