When lighting a tennis court, in addition to knowing how many lights we need, we also need to take into account the lux needed to light the tennis court. In this article, we will talk about the different lux levels needed for different levels of tennis courts so we can have a better plan for tennis court lighting.

What is a lux on a tennis court?

Before discussing the lux values required on a tennis court, let’s look at some basic information on what lux values are. Lux is basically a unit of illumination, which indicates the amount of luminous flux per unit area. In other words, lux is the number of lumens per square meter that a tennis court receives. Simply put, the brighter the light, the higher the lux on the tennis court. Tennis courts require approximately 200 to 1500 lux. This requirement varies with different aspects.

The number of lux required to light a tennis court will vary depending on the level of competition. Generally speaking, tennis courts hosting international and national tennis tournaments (such as Wimbledon and Australian Open) required higher levels of lux, while recreational tennis clubs can be lit more dimly.

Class of lighting Type of tennis court Lux required for the tennis court
Class I International or national tennis tournaments (with broadcasting) 750 to 1500 lux
Class II Regional tennis competition 500 to 750 lux
Class III Recreational, training or high school tennis courts 200 to 300 lux

Good lighting levels are important for tennis players because bright light helps to improve the vision of players and spectators. From the table above, we can see that the lux level of amateur tennis courts is about 200 to 300 lux. We do not need harsh lighting because these tennis courts are designed for relaxation, not for competition. Therefore, tennis players can enjoy the game in a relaxed way.

If the tennis court is designed for competition, then we need at least 500 lux or more. This is because brighter light allows players to clearly see the fast-moving tennis balls. Lighting is especially important to create a high contrast background that will help players and spectators see the tennis game clearly.

For international tennis tournaments such as the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon, we need about 1000 lux. The reason for the strong light is that it helps the camera to capture every movement of the tennis player so that the viewer in front of the TV can enjoy the match as if they were there.
