How to light up the ICC cricket world cup stadiums? Lighting fixtures are one of the paramount facilities for night cricket matches. Especially for the international tournament, the lighting requirement is of highest standard. As one of the ICC world cup stadium lighting suppliers, we thoroughly understand the lighting design principle and standard. Let’s explore how can we light up the magnificent stadiums below.

1. Kia Oval Stadium Lighting

a. Background

Kia-OvalThe Oval is a very popular cricket stadium in Kennington, London. It is one of the main venues of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Before becoming an international cricket stadium, The Oval used to hold historical football matches such as FA Cup & Rugby matches. The characteristic arch provides a partial sun shielding for spectators. 25,500 cricket fans can enjoy the exciting matches in this oval.

b. Light Pole

If we take a close look at the lighting facilities of Kia Oval, we can see there 4 high mast light poles surrounding the stadium. The pole height is approx. 50 meters.

c. Cricket Stadium Lighting Brightness Standard

Since it is designed for televised matches, the lux (brightness) requirement of the cricket stadium is approx. 2000 lux horizontal and 1500 lux vertical. Plus, there is a uniformity requirement of 0.65. Bright & uniform lighting can improve the vision of batsman and bowler. It is observed the brightness standard of non-televised cricket training or match is about 1/3 to 1/5 of that of televised because bright illumination is also important for 4K, or even 8K TV broadcasting. Our LED luminaires can fulfil such the rigorous requirement.

To have a successful lighting plan, we would utilize the DIALux software to simulate the lighting outcome. Our engineers will also customize the luminaires for the stadium, and have a comprehensive lighting plan as illustrated in the above picture.

Our service includes free lighting layout & consultation. Please feel free to contact us if you are interested in our lighting solution.

c. Luminaire Selection

Since it is an international cricket ground, it has an extraordinarily high lighting standard.

Brightness Level

First, the field should have ample brightness for evening and night matches. The vertical lux level of the field is around 900 lux to 1200 lux, while the horizontal lux level is about 1500 to 2000 lux.

Vertical means the illumination on the face & body of the cricket player. High brightness level is essential for televised matches because they audiences can see the facial expression and movement clearly.

On the contrary, horizontal means the brightness on the cricket field. Similarly, broadcasting is one of the major reasons to have such the high lighting level. If the field is for training purpose only, the required ground lux would become 400 to 500 lux.

To produce such a higher level of lighting, we will need hundreds of 1000W, 1500W or even 2000W LED flood lights.

Light Uniformity

Aside of brightness, we need to consider the uniformity of the illumination. What is lighting uniformity? It is basically a factor reflecting how the lights evenly distributed in the field. We can imagine if the lux level is same throughout the whole cricket ground, then the lighting uniformity is 1. However, it is almost impossible to achieve in reality because there is brightness variation within the region. Even the field is light up by sunlight, the lux level would not be the same in different position.

How to calculate the uniformity of the lighting? There are mainly two types of uniformity U1 & U2. U1 is the ratio between min. to average illuminance of the sports ground, while U2 is the ratio between min. to max. illuminance.

For such the professional lighting solution for the ICC Cricket World Cup, the uniformity requirement is about 0.7 to 0.8, which is challenging to achieve. According to your needs or the cricket field lighting requirement, our engineers will design the best lighting solution that satisfies all standard.
