How Many Lights are Used in Cricket Stadium?

how many lights do we need for a cricket field

Lighting is important for cricket grounds as it allows us to play this exciting sport at night and also energizes the cricketers and spectators. When lighting a cricket field, we need to decide on a specific number of cricket stadium lights to purchase. So, the question will be – how many lights to use on the cricket field? In fact, there is no fixed answer as the number of cricket stadium lights required depends on various factors such as the lux requirements of the cricket ground, the level of competition, the number of poles, the type of lighting, etc. Nevertheless, this article will give you a brief idea of the number of cricket field lights required in general.

How many lights are there on the cricket field?

The number of cricket field lights needed depends largely on the level of competition. Since the lux requirements for cricket field lighting are different for professional matches and training fields, we can use different amounts of lighting. For example, on outdoor cricket pitches for professional matches, we need brighter lights, while for training only dimmer lights are required.

Type of cricket field How many lights in cricket stadium Lux requirement
Class III (Recreational, training) 24 to 40 pcs of LED lights 200 to 500 lux
Class II (High school, regional cricket competitions) 40 to 100 pcs of LED lights 300 to 750 lux
Class I (Professional) 160 to 250 pcs of LED lights 750 to 1500 lux

As we can see from the table above, we need about 24 to 40 lights for the Class III cricket ground, or the so-called training cricket pitch. If we have 4 light poles on the cricket field, we would expect 6 to 10 lights per pole. This should be able to provide about 200 to 300 lux of light for the outfield and about 500 lux for the cricket ground.

If the cricket pitch is inside a high school, or if the venue is designed for regional cricket matches, we will need about 40 to 100 LED cricket stadium lights. This is because we need brighter lights for the cricketers so that they can see the fast moving Kookaburra cricket ball.

For Class I cricket ground, which are designed to host televised, international cricket tournaments such as the ICC, we need more than 160 to 250 LED cricket lights and sometimes we need more than 300 LED lights. This should be able to provide about 750 lux of light on the cricket field.

If we use LED, metal halide or high pressure sodium, how many lights does the cricket field need to have?

number of LED lights required for cricket stadium

In fact, the above session was talking about the amount of LED lighting needed for a cricket ground. If we were to use HID lamps for stadium lighting, it would be a completely different story. Since these lights have different light effects, we would expect that we would need different numbers of lights to illuminate the cricket ground.

Class III Cricket Field (Indoor and Outdoor)
Class II Cricket Field Class I Cricket Stadium
LED cricket field lights 24 to 40 pcs 40 to 100 pcs 160 to 250 pcs
Metal Halide cricket ground lights 50 to 100 pcs 80 to 180 pcs 250 to 350 pcs
High Pressure Sodium stadium lights 75 to 120 pcs 100 to 220 pcs 250 to 380 pcs

For the same power consumption, the number of LED cricket stadium lights used will be the lowest of LED, metal halide and high pressure sodium lamps. Since we need to install hundreds of high pressure sodium or metal halide lamps on the light poles of cricket stadiums, these light sources are now rarely used. Instead, we can significantly reduce the number of cricket lights used by replacing HID lights with LED stadium lights. The number of cricket stadium lights can be reduced to 1/2 or even 1/3 of the original number.

Unlike light poles for outdoor cricket pitches, if we are lighting an indoor cricket practice net, we can use an array of 25 to 36 LED lights to illuminate the cricket pitch, depending on the size and shape of the indoor practice net. Contact us for more information and a free lighting design.
