What is the Lux Level Required for Cricket Stadium?

how many lux do we need for cricket field lights

Lighting a cricket field is a challenging task because we have so many parameters to deal with. One of the most important things to consider is the lux level and lumens required. What is the lux value for cricket stadium lighting? There is no definite answer to this question as it depends on several factors such as the level of play, size of the cricket field, lighting layout, etc.

Generally, if the cricket ground is designed to host international matches (e.g. ICC), then it should be brighter. A cricket stadium requires more lumens than a traditional sports field because the stadium is a very extensive area that requires super bright lighting. We will explain this a little bit in this article.

How many lux do we need for cricket field lighting?

The very quick answer is that we need about 200 to 1500 lux for cricket field lighting, depending on the type of pitch and the level of play. Believe it or not, we may even need to illuminate the cricket pitch with 2500 lux, depending on the lighting requirements of the specific field.

Sometimes we need brighter lighting because we need strong lights to capture fast moving cricket balls and cricketers. In addition, some studies have shown that bright cricket ground lighting can energize the cricketers so we can have a more engaging game.

How many lux do we need to light up a class I cricket stadium?

class I cricket stadium lux level needed

Cricket grounds are divided into three main categories, namely first class, second class and third class. Class I refers to professional playing cricket grounds. We need very bright lighting, say 1500 lux to illuminate the cricket field and 750 lux to illuminate the cricket outfield. This was needed because we needed to provide adequate lighting for the cricketers and the cameras for the 4K or 8K telecast.

Lighting uniformity should be at least 0.7 to prevent sudden changes in lux values across the cricket field. Cricket ground floodlights and spotlights are common types of light sources because they are powerful enough to illuminate the entire cricket pitch. Sometimes, these lights are also mounted on high poles up to 60 meters (197 feet) high.

How many lux do we need to light a Class II cricket stadium?

Class II means that the cricket field is designed for regional competitions or for high school. We don’t need as much intensity as a Class I pitch because we don’t need to meet the broadcast requirements of a Class I cricket pitch, so the lights can be slightly dimmer – we need 500 to 750 lux for the central pitch and 300 to 500 lux for the cricket outfield.

What are the lux requirements for a Class III cricket field?

lux level for indoor cricket practice net and facility

Since the purpose of a Class III cricket field and practice net is for training and recreation, the lighting on the cricket field should be relaxed and less harsh. The appropriate lux level required is about 200 to 500 lux, so the lumens will be much lower compared to a Class I cricket field.
