What are the Cricket Field Lighting Standards?

what is cricket stadium lighting standard

The lighting of a cricket ground requires detailed planning. For a successful lighting project, we need to follow all the cricket lighting standards such as brightness, uniformity of light and color temperature criterion. They are important because a good cricket lighting system can provide better visibility to the cricketers and improve their performance.

After knowing these criteria, we can choose the best cricket field lights with the required specifications to illuminate the field. In this article, we will then explain to you the common lighting standards for different types of cricket field or stadium – from amateur to professional.

The importance of cricket lighting standards

Cricket is a very popular sport in India, Pakistan, the British Isles and Australia. In order to build the best cricket stadiums in the world, we need to understand the special lighting requirements needed for cricket stadiums. In fact, in the 21st century, people are becoming more and more aware of environmental protection. That is why we tend to opt for energy efficient LED lighting solutions.

Using LED lights in cricket stadiums can reduce carbon emissions because LEDs are more energy efficient than HID lights such as metal halide, mercury vapor, HPS and LPS lights. Although LEDs are not a regular requirement for cricket lights, more and more cricket ground lighting contractors are preferring to replace HID lights in cricket pitches with LEDs.

With more and more people playing cricket at night, a good, energy efficient LED cricket field lighting has become a prerequisite. LedsMaster is manufacturing and supplying the best quality stadium lighting systems for any type of cricket field.

Brightness and light uniformity are said to be important criteria for sports lighting solutions because if the cricket pitch is too bright or too dark, the user experience will be greatly affected. Cricketers may not be able to see the fast-moving cricket ball clearly; and if the lights have glare and flicker, their eyes will be strained.

Type of cricket field Cricket pitch (infield) lux standard
Cricket outfield lux standard
Lighting uniformity requirement
Class I

(National, international cricket tournaments)

750 to 1500 lux 500 to 750 lux > 0.7
Class II

(High school cricket ground, region cricket competitions, etc)

500 to 750 lux 300 to 500 lux > 0.7
Class III

(Amateur cricket field, local cricket club, training, etc)

300 to 500 lux 200 to 300 lux > 0.5 to 0.6

Generally speaking, the higher the level of competition, the brighter the cricket pitch should be. For example, if the cricket pitch is designed for televised matches, we need the highest lux level standard of cricket lighting, i.e. 1500 lux. Some cricket stadiums even need brighter lights, such as 2500 lux to 3000 lux. This is because we need such bright lights for video shooting.

For non-televised cricket matches, the lighting requirements are a little lower, such as 500 to 750 lux. For training and recreational cricket ground, the lighting criteria are reduced to 300 to 500 lux. For amateur cricket pitches, we do not need such intense lighting as we can create a relaxed feel for recreational cricketers.

Sometimes a correction factor of 0.8 to 0.9 is recommended because we can take lumen depreciation into account. Typically, lumen depreciation is about 20% to 30% after a certain amount of time in use, say 80,000 to 120,000 hours.
