LED Replacement for Halogen and CFL – Europe is Going to BAN Halogen and CFL

europe bans halogen bulbs by 2020 time to replace with LED

European Union is banning the use of halogens and Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) and expects positive results by 2020. Many indoor or outdoor venues such as airport apron, football field, tennis court, basketball court, warehouse, parking lot, sea port, power plant, high mast, high bay or low bay lighting may need to do the replacement with LED lights.

In light of the Ecodesign Law, the minimum luminous efficiency requirement is 85 lm/w for all lighting fixture available on the market. However, the efficiency of tungsten halogen lamps (25 lm/w) is much lower than this standard. Even though the efficiency of CFL with ballasts can reach 60 lm/w, it is still not sufficient to meet the standard. And thus, tungsten halogen and CFL bulbs will be banned in Europe. In fact, replacing CFL and halogen by LED light has many advantages. Surely the luminous efficiency of LED is about 130 to 150 lm/W, which is significantly higher than 85 lm/W. Apart from high energy efficiency, LED is also more environmentally friendly because of elimination the use of toxic mercury and heavy metal. It is wise to move forward to LED despite the ban of halogen and fluorescent.

LED replacement for halogen & CFL bulbs

Revolutionary change on lighting industry

The Ecodesign Law progressively banned the incandescent light bulb in 2009 while promoting the use of other energy-saving lighting alternatives. Now the similar regulation (banning of halogen and CFL with lighting efficiency less than 85 lm/W) is released again. It pushes the lighting market from traditional, HID lighting to contemporary, energy-saving, clean, LED lighting.

Under the regulation, the lighting fixtures should be removable and replaceable, to avoid unnecessary wastage. This new proposal, if got approved, would cause a big blast on the whole lighting industry especially for those manufacturers who apply automatic or semi-automatic production systems. They would probably have to reform their overall production process. For consumers, they would be looking for lighting fixtures that have replaceable ability.

LED replacement for halogen and CFL in the future

LED lights are the favorable options when it comes to outdoor and indoor high power lighting because of high energy efficiency (130 to 150 lm/W), long lifespan (80000 hours), and durability (IP68, anti-shock), and high quality illumination (anti-glare, flicker-free). Each of these benefits overweight the CFL and halogen. Thanks to our R&D team, we now have LED lighting fixtures from 40 to 10000 watt having luminous efficiency from 130-180 lm/w.

Energy saving alternatives after banning the halogen and CFL

You might wonder why do I need such the high luminous efficiency? For example, a 100W LED retrofits 1000W halogen flood lights. To light up a stadium, we need about 50000 to 70000W LED lights. However, if you convert to halogen, it takes 10 times high power, which means 500000 watt halogen lights. In other words, to have the same lux or brightness level, the power required for LED lighting is much lesser than halogen of CFL flood lamps. Longer service life also means we have no need to replace the LED lights so frequently. The maintenance and installation cost can be saved.
